My video Your Loving Son uses photo albums, letters and interviews of family members to and recreate my maternal grandfather’s experience as an Engineman Marine during World War II in the Pacific.
My grandfather spent more time overseas than he did behind a high school desk, dropping out of high school to enlist at 17. By the time he was 21 he had celebrated Victory Japan and had seen nearly two years of active combat. Flipping through these 70 year-old albums in many ways mirrors the act of recollecting the past, as the pages and events are rarely recalled in chronological order. Shocking experiences resurface in the form of explicit photographs of enemy soldiers killed in action, shuffled in stacks of postcards and portraits of family back home. |
